An european association for collective memories

Our association, Rencontre Réconciliation , is dedicated to the collective memories

and legacy of the trauma left by the Second World War. More than 80 years later, the scars of this war continue to weigh heavily on many European families. Our mission? To create a space for sharing and mutual understanding, beyond national borders.

Independence and diversity of experiences

Independent of any political, religious or trade union influence, Rencontre Réconciliation aims to enable every European to share and understand the history of others. War stories often vary depending on origin, culture and education, and it is this diversity that we wish to highlight.

Four categories of war traces

The association distinguishes four main categories of traces of war:

  1. Military personnel and civilian populations persecuted : Executions, deportations, torture, bombings, etc.

  2. Children of war : Born from the union between a German soldier and a woman from the occupied countries.

  3. Forced to join : Young people from Moselle or Alsace enlisted in the German army under threat of reprisals.

  4. Supporters of the Third Reich : Those who actively supported Nazi ideas and actions.

Kriegsenkel: an universal concept

The concept of Kriegsenkel (“grandchildren of war”) embodies the transgenerational transmission of trauma. Although limited to the third generation in Germany, Rencontre Réconciliation applies this concept to all generations and categories, for a global understanding.

Our goals: awareness and reconciliation

  1. Raising awareness of the Kriegsenkel phenomenon in France : Through cultural events and conferences, we wish to raise awareness among the French public of this still little-known reality.

  2. Promoting European reconciliation : By organising meetings between those who bear the scars of war, we seek to promote mutual understanding, which is essential for reconciliation between European citizens.

A new boost for Franco-German relations

We firmly believe that our initiatives will contribute to strengthening relations between families of different nations, thus revitalizing exchanges within European twinning committees.

With a deep commitment to memory, reconciliation and cultural sharing, Rencontre Réconciliation works to build a European future based on mutual understanding and tolerance.
